Dozens of families joined us, Hastings Urban Bikes, on Sunday for a Kidical Mass on-road ride round the lower part of Alexandra Park, down Queens Road, past the Council’s offices and along the A259 to Warrior Square – which is a long way, with hills, for children as young as six to cycle but several did. Bikes of all sorts were there – the youngest’s first geared bikes, cargo bikes, Brompton bikes, shopping bikes with baskets and racing bikes with drop handlebars – a show of the potential everyday utility of the minimal machine to (almost) everyone.

International Car Free Day falls on September 22nd every year and we always like to mark it somehow.

It’s very nice for bicycle-minded people to meet one another and go on a collective outing and it’s very necessary to show our Councillors and Local Transport Authority that non-car journeys need protected safe space to be doable.

Imagine this was a more common sight in Hastings?

We have a great pent-up need for a Borough-wide segregated cycle lane network for school, college, work, shops, beach and anywhere anyone fancies going to without a car. There is Government funding to design and build the infrastructure and everyone on the ride wishes our councils would find a way to use it!
