Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council adds Poole to the list of towns with 20mph zones. BCP Council says there is currently 77 20mph zones across the area and these proposals will have safety benefits and would align the conurbation with more than 20 UK urban authorities, including Southampton, Bristol, Brighton, Portsmouth Edinburgh, Chichester and Bath.
“Every year, we receive requests for road safety measures from residents and schools. This proposal is about creating safer, quieter and more pleasant neighbourhoods for the people who live, work and go to school here”.
“A small reduction in vehicle speed can make a life‑changing difference. We know that if someone is hit at 20mph, they have a 97.5 per cent chance of survival, which is far higher than at 30mph”.
Studies done in these areas have shown 20mph limits to be successful in reducing casualties. For example in Brighton & Hove, a 20-mph limit reduced the number of casualties by 12 per cent and the number of seriously injured or killed by 20 per cent.
In Newcastle, a 20-mph limit in some areas reduced the number of car-related accidents by more than half and in Portsmouth a 20-mph limit reduced reported injuries by 21 per cent.
